Linux System Administrator: Career interview with Guillaume Petitpierre

Net4All employees work with passion and discipline! Now, one of the members of the technical team has the chance to answer our questions: Guillaume tells us about his experience as a Linux System Administrator, as a member of Kevin Chollet’s team.

To begin with, what is your position at Net4All and what does it entail?

I have been a Linux System Administrator at Net4All since 2017. My work consists of the deployment of Linux infrastructures as well as their maintenance in operational conditions.

I also work to support these environments as an expert (level 3).

How did you end up here? How long have you been working in this field?

I have a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in software development. My education is not really in the same field as my job because no Linux-oriented training exists in Switzerland. It was before my career as a computer scientist that I discovered the Linux operating system; I had heard a lot about it.

I loved this system from the beginning because it offers a lot of possibilities such as customisation, especially within the graphical interface (a real source of “fun” when I was a teenager). The more I discovered, the more I wanted to learn.

So it seemed logical to me to find a “Linux-oriented” job. Today, I feel lucky to be able to work in a field that I am so passionate about!

What is your typical day like?

There is no typical day, it all depends on the projects in progress and on the support workload. The projects can be very different from one another and I have to constantly adapt to the client’s needs.

J’interviens non seulement sur des projets assez courants comme une infrastructure web hébergée sur notre cloud privé mais aussi sur des projets qui font appel à des nouvelles technologies telles que Kubernetes.

What do you like most about this job?

What I am most passionate about is working in a changing environment: every day there are new things to learn about infrastructures and technologies.

I also enjoy the daily challenges I face solving IT problems. It’s very satisfying to find the solution to a problem!

What made you want to join Net4All?

What attracted me is being able to work in a job that I am passionate about at an employee-focused company.

I particularly appreciate the interactions I have with my colleagues, as well as the very stimulating knowledge transfer it initiates.
